The IMCC4 #SciBards all came across poetry separately and met on social media, their shared love of science, poetry, and sciart instantly binding the group. The self-titled SciBards–named after Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon–will be leading the IMCC4 lunchtime workshop “Using a pencilfish to write whales: Communicating conservation and science through poetry” on July 31. Hoping to foster the artistic endeavors of scientists and conservationists, the SciBards will be discussing the rich history of science poetry and poetry about the natural world, using poetry and art for science communication and education, types of poetry, and how to get started writing poetry. Not only a means for scicomm, poetry and other creative endeavors can also benefit scientists, conservationists, and students by serving as an imaginative outlet, a means to vary thought processes, and an inspiration for approaching research and management from a different direction.

This workshop will discuss theses items, followed by short poetry class and group poetry exercises. Participants will be invited to write poetry throughout IMCC4, to be compiled for the blog.

And throughout it all, a love –
Naturally – of writing, words.
